Upgrade Provides Durham County a Next-Gen Data Center
By Christopher Whittle
On the heels of Durham County’s Public Technology Institute’s 2016 Tech Savvy award, Durham County has implemented a state of the art data center through software-defined networking.
Utilizing Cisco’s Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI), Durham County (DCo) has invested in the future of data center technology. Seth Price, Durham County senior network engineer and architect stated, "We wanted to build a solution where, not only would we have good hardware and good software-defined controllers, but we would also have good support from the vendor."

Automation will take over and reduce network and data center maintenance down to 20 percent.
In addition to the technical benefits, equipment and rack space has been halved, cutting electricity, heating and cooling costs by one-third.
This upgrade enhances DCo’s existing downtown fiber ring, a critical foundation for cities and counties seeking “smart” designations.
