Durham County Hires Information Security Officer

Lyvon Garth Jr., with more than 20 years of public sector experience, has joined Durham County's Information Services & Technology department as the County's first Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).

'Cyber security is everyone's job however, creating a dedicated position focused on Information/Cyber Security is critical in establishing and maintaining the enterprise vision, strategy, and program to ensure information assets and technologies are adequately protected here at Durham County Government,' said Greg Marrow, Durham County CIO. 'Lyvon has a proven record at the national level in strategic security operations. His leadership enables Durham County to establish a compliant cybersecurity program effective in protection and response to cyber-attacks. We are proud to hire Lyvon as our first CISO as we reinforce the County's cybersecurity culture.'

Garth started his cybersecurity career in the Washington, D.C. area supporting the Department of Defense on several projects that protected sensitive information from being exposed, putting our national security at risk.' In these projects, Garth gained additional experience with project management, risk management, auditing, compliance, and policy development.' For more than 10 years, Garth has focused on helping senior leaders evaluate the cybersecurity risk to their environments and provided recommendations on accepting or mitigating information security risks.

A Durham County native, Garth graduated from Northern High School (Durham, NC) then joined the United States Marine Corps serving for eight years before pursuing his passion for computers and technology.

Garth holds a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) certification and is an active member of the International Information System Security Certification Consortium (ISC)2, Research Triangle Park Chapter.' He lives in Cary with his wife and daughter.
